The
Maharashtra is one of the severely drought prone regions in the country. Several parts of Maharashtra reel under the
drought for years. The State Government of Maharashtra has launched a water
conservation scheme, ‘Jal Yukt Shivar’ to make state free of water scarcity. The campaign has been participated by the Government
agencies, Civil societies, NGOs and the Media.
SSM,
which has already been into the consistent
water conservation activities through various programmes , also took
part in the scheme devotedly. To scale
up the work, the SSM has united 140 NGOs under ‘Jana Sathi Drought Relief
Forum’ and continued to work relentlessly through number of relief works
ranging from broadening and deepening river base to removing silt from lakes,
ponds, farm ponds, canals. It also
ventured into building check dams, canals, small ponds and wells at individual
and community levels.
In
recognition to the drought prevention and relief work under taken by the SSM,
the State Govt. of Maharashtra has announced a state level Award to the
organization.
